Seen as the major threat in the dusty road challenge, the South African is single handedly coming to challenge the reign long dominated by Subaru-Mitsubishi rivalry and later it turned Ford FiestaSkoda Fabia showdown.
Driving Toyota Etios, the South African, however, must clear East Africa’s big hurdles most popular being Jas Mangat, Karan Patel, Kassim Nasser, Carl Tundo, Randip Birdi and Duncan Mubiru.
Dharam Pandya who the last Oryx Rally in Subaru Impreza in 2019 is back on the course to defend his title since the event was not staged in 2020 due to COVID-19 scare.
Records show the Tanzanian round of African Rally Championship (ARC) has been solely a Subaru-Mitsubishi Evos affair since its inception in 2001.
Subaru Impreza has won it ten times while Mitsubishi grabbed the ARC title fifth times. Skoda Fabia driven by Manvir Baryan has won the title twice in 2017 and 2018.
The Oryx Rally spectacular actions will begin on Saturday, July 24 with a qualifying stage to determine who starts first in the First round.
The event’s head of organizing committee, Satinder Birdi said the first action will be a scrutineering (car inspection) tomorrow At the Wheel Yard in Dar es Salaam and a day later on Friday, July 23, Oryx Rally 2021 will be officially flagged off at Southern Sun Hotel in Dar es Salaam.
With 34 cars registered for the Oryx Rally of 2021, Tanzania, Tanzania motorsports boss, Satinder Birdi believes WRC candidate rally held in Kenya has inspired the continent’s top drivers to come to Tanzania.
“Equator Rally of Kenya has provided us top class drivers and their presence helps to spice up Oryx Rally challenge,” Birdi told reporters at Onomo Hotel during the official launch.
ORYX Rally of Tanzania was officially launched in Dar es Salaam last Thursday ahead of its official showdown July 23-25. There are five types of rally cars in this year’s round of the continental class event.
Besides the usual SubaruMitsubishi showdown, this year’s Oryx Rally has added Toyota Etios, Ford Fiesta and Skoda Fabia on the event’s flag off podium. The Oryx Rally of Tanzania is the third round of the African rally championship 2020/2021 after Ivory Coast’s Rallye Bandama and Kenya’s Equator rally.
There are 19 Tanzanian drivers and 14 foreign entries from South Africa, Burundi, Kenya and Uganda. According to Birdi, other major title contenders from Tanzania are Gurjit Dhani, Kelvin Taylor, Altaf Munge, Manvir Birdi, Gurpal Sandu, Shehzad Munge, Mandeep Dhani,Jamil Khan and Tufail Tufail.
