Miner dies after experiencing difficult breathing in Arusha

RUBY miner has died and another is admitted to hospital after experiencing difficult breathing while in a mine.

Speaking on the incident, Arusha Regional Police Commander (RPC) Ramadhani Ng’anzi said Mr Baraka Lenguti (28), a resident of Kia in Siha District, Kilimanjaro Region, suffocated while in the mine and his body was taken by Longido District police officers for investigation and was due to be handed over to his relatives for burial.

He noted that the incident occurred between Saturday midnight and 7 am yesterday.

He noted that the name of the other miner was yet to be known. He said the latter was still admitted to hospital. Mr Ng’anzi called upon miners to abide by mining rules and regulations whenever they were engaged in mining activities.

The miners suffered the fate after reportedly ignoring technical precautions of not entering the mine within 48 hours after blasting and drilling to break rocks for excavation.

The mine in which the dual suffered is under Agrovet Investment Company, owned by a renowned Arusha businessman, Mr Gabriel Sendeu, and it is situated at Mundarara near the huge and modern ruby mine – Mundarara Company - owned by Mr Rahim Pendeza and his associates.

Ruby is a pink to bloodred coloured gemstone that has made Arusha become a gemstone powerhouse.

It is a variety of aluminium oxide while there are other varieties of gemquality corundum called sapphires. It is one of the traditional cardinal gems, together with amethyst, sapphire, emerald, and diamond.

The word ruby comes from a Latin word, ruber for red. The colour of a ruby is due to the element chromium. The quality of a ruby is determined by its colour, cut and clarity, which, along with carat weight, affects its value.

The brightest and most valuable shade of red called blood-red or pigeon blood, commands a large premium over other rubies of similar quality.

A ruby without any needlelike rutile inclusions may indicate that the stone has been treated.

Ruby is the traditional birthstone for July and is usually more pink than garnet, although some rhodolite garnets have a similar pinkish type to most rubies.

The world’s most valuable ruby is the Sunrise Ruby.
