THE Tanzania Media Women’s Association (TAMWA) – Zanzibar, has requested President Ali Mohamed Shein to consider gender equality in the appointment of new Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC).
ZEC five-year term expired in April, this year and Dr Shein last week met with some top leaders of opposition political parties for consultations before appointing seven new members of the commission, two of which should come from the opposition.
In a press release from TAMWA signed by its Director, Dr Mzuri Issa, since Zanzibar is part of United Republic of Tanzania, “it is inclined to reach the 50/50 gender equality goal as provided by various international and regional protocols, including Southern African Development Community (SADC) and African Union (AU).”
TAMWA argues further that the Isles population also indicates there are more women than men, therefore, women and men deserve equal rights and opportunities in decision making positions in healing marginalisation of women for years.
“Our prayer to Dr Shein is to consider gender, because we have capable women,” said Mzuri, who said that ZEC, which has just ended its term under the chairmanship of Mr Jecha Salim Jecha, had no women commissioners.
TAMWA has been raising women voices, saying they need to be included in decision making bodies on gender equal basis, so that their issues are better handled for their development.
TAMWA has also been in the forefront in fighting for children rights.
