New fish feed factory to boost Mwanza aquaculture

MWANZA: THE government is set to construct a fish feed manufacturing factory in Mwanza City in a strategic move aimed at lowering production costs, stimulating investment in aquaculture and strengthening the fisheries economy.

Deputy Minister for Livestock and Fisheries, Ng’wasi Kamani, said the factory will address one of the biggest cost drivers in fish farming—feed—thereby improving profit margins for farmers, encouraging private investment and accelerating growth of the aquaculture sub-sector.

Speaking on December 30, 2025, during a meeting with beneficiaries of the cage fish farming project in the Kisoko area, Mwanza Region, Kamani said the project aligns with the government’s agenda to build value addition industries and unlock the commercial potential of the fisheries sector.

“The ministry, through projects supported by our development partners, is coming to establish a fish feed factory that will reduce farmers’ production costs and make aquaculture a more profitable and attractive business,” Kamani said.

She said that high prices of imported and privately produced fish feed have been limiting expansion of commercial fish farming, particularly cage culture, stressing that local production will stabilise supply and support increased output.

Kamani further revealed that the ministry is preparing to engage private sector players to foster partnerships in the production of fish fingerlings and affordable fish feed, a move expected to strengthen the fisheries value chain and create new business opportunities.

“We are arranging discussions with private investors to build strong collaboration in producing fingerlings and fish feed that are affordable, reliable and accessible, so that the sector can grow sustainably,” she said.

She added that the government is also expanding the scope of public financing schemes to ensure loans reach all actors across the fisheries value chain, from hatcheries and feed producers to farmers, processors and traders.

“The objective is to enable more Tanzanians to participate in fisheries as a commercial venture, create jobs, increase incomes and enhance the sector’s contribution to the national economy,” she said.
