NEC: Ensure transparency, professionalism at work

MOROGORO: THE Chairman of the National Election Commission (NEC), Judge Jacobs Mwambegele has called upon returning officers tasked with overseeing the upcoming by-elections to prioritise transparency and professionalism.

Speaking at the opening of the training session for election officials in Morogoro yesterday, Judge Mwambegele, emphasised on the importance of involving election stakeholders at every stage of the electoral process.

NEC recently announced the scheduling of by-elections in 23 wards across Mainland Tanzania, slated for March 20, this year.

As preparations intensified, Judge Mwambegele urged election supervisors to engage closely with political parties and other stakeholders in their respective areas.

He stressed that collaboration with stakeholders would facilitate smoother execution of electoral duties.

“It is good that you closely involve the political parties and other election stakeholders in your areas regarding the electoral issues that deserve to be involved as this will make it easier for you to carry out your duties,” remarked Judge Mwambegele during the training session.

Furthermore, Judge Mwambegele admonished election officials to avoid nepotism and favouritism when selecting personnel to oversee polling stations.

He emphasised the importance of appointing professional centre executives, who are self-aware and capable of executing their responsibilities impartially.

“Let’s stop favouring relatives and friends who don’t have the qualifications to do election activities,” urged Judge Mwambegele, highlighting the need for merit-based selection criteria.

In addition to promoting transparency in personnel selection, Judge Mwambegele underscored the significance of logistical preparedness.

He urged election officials to familiarise themselves with the geographical and infrastructural nuances of the areas where elections will be held.

Emphasising proactive measures, he encouraged advance identification and inspection of polling stations to address any special requirements effectively.

Judge Mwambegele also reiterated the importance of adhering to established procedures on election day to ensure a seamless voting process.

He urged officials to communicate promptly with the Commission for guidance on any electionrelated issues that may arise.

Judge Mwambegele also reminded election officials of the legal imperative surrounding electoral conduct, saying that adherence to rules and procedures serves as the foundation for a successful and peaceful election, thereby minimising the potential for complaints or violence.
