ZANZIBAR President Dr Hussein Mwinyi has assured the business people in Qatar that Zanzibar is conducive for investors.
He highlighted some areas for investments as in tourism, blue economy as well as oil and gas sectors of the economy.
Dr Mwinyi stated this at the ongoing Third edition of the ‘Qatar Economic Forum, Powered by Bloomberg’. The forum opened on Tuesday and will wind up today, under the esteemed patronage of the Amir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir (leader) of Qatar.
Dr Mwinyi is attending the forum on behalf of the President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
The event will bring together over 1,000 global business leaders. The 2023 forum aims to delve into the latest advancements in finance, energy, healthcare, and technology through keynote interviews, panel discussions, and interactive workshops, and also it seeks to explore how these trends can drive future growth and shed light on the burgeoning south-tosouth economy.
On his arrival in Doha City, Dr Mwinyi met with the Vice-Chairman of the Qatar Business Council, Mr Muhamed Bin Ahmed Al-Kuwari and stakeholders from the private sector of industry, inviting them to invest in Zanzibar where multiple opportunities are available.
“We need to establish health tourism, energy, and conference tourism as new areas to invest,” he said. Potential investors, led by the Vice-Chairman of the Qatar Business Council, Mr Mohammed bin Ahmed Al-Kuwari, express the desire to invest in Zanzibar and Tanzania in general, while admiring the environment and culture of Zanzibar.
On his part, the Director General of the Zanzibar Investment Promotion Authority (ZIPA) Mr Shariff Ali Shariff, one of the senior officers accompanying President Mwinyi, explained the importance of the Qatar business council to meet with their Zanzibar counterpart to further strengthen the relationship.
Mr Sharrif explained that the investment opportunities in Zanzibar also include the need for construction of high class tourism hotels to meet the increasing demand, and that small islands are available for lease for such huge investment.
The ZIPA also mentioned and advertised its area of Makurunge in Bagamoyo, Tanzania mainland, suitable for tourism and even agriculture investment. In reply leaders and members of the business community expressed interest to invest in energy, mainly electricity production.
