PRESIDENT of Zanzibar Dr Hussein Mwinyi on Friday accepted the resignation letter of the Director General of Zanzibar Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Authority (ZAECA) ACP Ahmed Khamis Makarani.
A statement issued by the Director of Zanzibar State House director of Presidential Communications Charles Hilary has it that, Dr Mwinyi accepted the resignation letter of the Zaeca boss with immediate effect.
ACP Makarani’s resignation has come a week after President Mwinyi asked the ZAECA to make self-assessment on its performance due to an increase in theft incidents of government properties and economic sabotage.
Dr Mwinyi made the statement shortly after receiving the audit report for the year 2021/22 from the Zanzibar Controller and Auditor General Zanzibar Controller and Auditor General, Dr Othman Abass.
The report showed that 4.6bn/- was not accounted for by various government entities during the period under review.
Also, there was an increase in cases of embezzlement of public funds, forgery, and irresponsibility of government executives.
“It is important for ZAECA to make an assessment on its performance due to hikes in cases related to theft of government properties and economic sabotage,” said Dr Mwinyi during an event held at the Zanzibar state house.
The President said that it is disappointing to see that despite confession by some of the suspects and others being ready to return the funds to the government no legal action has been taken against them.
He gave an example of online theft incident that occurred at Zanzibar Revenue Board (ZRB), saying to date the authority has not taken any action … “such culture has caused recurrence of such incidents… it has not helped the government because there are some reported incidents in a period of two years.”
Dr Mwinyi ordered for stern measures to be taken against all people who will be found to be involved in stealing public funds, insisting that it is difficult for the isles to attain development under such circumstances.
He directed all government leaders to see the magnitude of the problem and take measures against the culprits.
In another development, President Mwinyi said the government will take measures to control abuse of public funds and office misuse for the sake of product development and economic well-being in the isles.
He also expressed his concern about the presence of dishonest civil servants who lead to leakage of government revenues for their individual gains.
Speaking in the Friday prayers at the Masjid Mabluu in Urban West Region.
The recent audit report of the CAG shows a huge mismanagement of public funds, ensuring the government will work hard to fight the embezzlement.
He also asked civil servants and those who are trusted in the public officials to work hard for the national interest.
He went on remind member so fthe commity ot join govenrment eforts in comnartting sexual and all forms of harrasment as they paint a bad picture for the peolle in yhe islands.
“We should also strive to protect and maintain the existing peace and tranquility since it is vital for our own development in all aspects,” noted Dr Mwinyi.
