Muungano Cup 2025 set to ignite Zanzibar

ZANZIBAR: THE stage is set and excitement is building as the much-anticipated Muungano Cup returns next week, bringing together top-tier football talent from both Zanzibar and Mainland Tanzania.

The tournament, held annually to commemorate the historic Union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar on April 26, 1964, will take center stage at the state-of-the-art New Amaan Complex in Zanzibar.

This year’s edition promises thrilling action, fierce rivalries, and a celebration of unity through sport though one major name will be missing from the lineup.

In a notable absence, one of the country’s football powerhouse Simba SC will not feature in this year’s Muungano tournament. The Msimbazi-based giants have opted to prioritise their campaign in the CAF Confederation Cup, where they continue to chase continental success.

Currently, Simba is in Zanzibar, gearing up for a high-stakes semi-final first leg clash against South Africa’s Stellenbosch FC, set to take place on Easter Sunday, April 20 at the same Amaan Complex. Stellenbosch is expected to arrive on the Isles tomorrow evening ahead of the eagerly awaited encounter.

Despite Simba’s absence, the Muungano Cup lineup is packed with talent and promise. The action kicks off on Wednesday, April 23, with an exciting opener between JKU and Singida Black Stars at 10:15 PM. Known for their spirited clashes in domestic play, this game is poised to set the tone for a gripping tournament.

Thursday, April 24, will see a double-header of thrilling encounters with Zimamoto vs. Coastal Union at 8:15 AM – Expect a tightly contested match, as both teams bring strong league form into the tournament.

KMKM SC vs. Azam FC at 10:15 PM – A clash of titans. These two clubs are knockoutstage specialists and perennial fan favorites, likely to attract a packed stadium.

On Friday, April 25, all eyes will be on the 2:15 AM showdown as KVZ FC squares off against Mainland giants Yanga SC. The Jangwani-based outfit is in scintillating form and will be looking to make a statement. However, KVZ is no stranger to surprises and will be aiming to pull off a memorable upset.

The Muungano Cup is more than a football competition—it’s a vibrant celebration of national unity, sporting spirit, and cultural heritage. While Simba’s absence will be felt, it opens the door for other clubs to shine and stake their claim on this prestigious title.
