MUHAS and Sweden sign 12.7bn/- grant agreement to boost research ,training and Innovation

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) and Sweden have inked a six- years grant agreement of more than 12 bn/ to strengthen research, innovation and training for the PHD and Masters students.
Speaking on Thursday at the signing ceremony held in Dar es Salaam, MUHAS Vice Chancellor
Prof Appolinary Kamuhabwa said that the implementation of the agreement will officially begin in December this year and continue until June 2030.
“Today, we have signed a new agreement worth five million US dollars, which will officially begin in December. The agreement will focus on three main areas including training,innovation and research,” MUHAS boss asserted .
He further added that in these collaborations, MUHAS is also partnering with three universities in Sweden, including Umeå, Uppsala University and Karolinska Institutet, who will participate as co-supervisors of the PhD students.
In line with this ,Prof Kamuabwa said Tanzania and Sweden have been collaborating in research for 48 years.
The collaboration has focused on enhancing the role and capacity of the university to address critical health challenges of national importance, such as human resource for health, health policies and guidelines, and evolving disease landscape.
“The last phase of Swedish support 2015-2023, has increased the pool of scientists. During 2015-2024, 32 PhD (86 per cent of registered), and 11 (69 per cent of registered) Masters students have graduated,” he said
However , he commend the the govenrmet of Sweden for the support saying the support enabled the institution to develop solutions in the health sector.
Ambassador to Sweden in Tanzania,Ms Charlotta Macias said the embassy looks forward to collaborating with MUHAS on a new phase which is also the final phase of Swedish support to MUHAS.
“The Embassy would like to collaborate with MUHAS and continue to make known the good results of the research achieved. We would also like to advocate with MUHAS for increased national funding for high-level research training,” the diplomat added.
Meanwhile the Minister for Health , Jenister Muhagama has reiterated the government’s commitment to working with various stakeholders to strengthen the health system.

The Minister made the remarks yesterday at the opening the 4 th Tanzania Digital Health and Innovation Forum and Exhibition held at Mloganzila in Dar es Salaam.
“The gorvnemement will continue working with development partners, private sector and research institution to strengthen the health system through public private partnership and by embracing digital transformation and evidence based intervention.
The Minister added that these strategies will realize universal health coverage and delivering quality health care for all Tanzanians.
