MOI to expand surgical capacity for accident-related cases

DODOMA: THE Tanzanian government has announced plans to expand surgical capacity at the Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute (MOI) by increasing the number of operating rooms, in a bid to enhance service delivery and respond to the growing number of accident-related cases.

Minister of Health Jenista Mhagama announced on Monday, when inaugurating the new MOI Board of Trustees at the Ministry’s headquarters in Dodoma. The board will be chaired by Dr. Martina Njelekela.

“We are committed to expanding operating rooms as much as possible to ensure surgeries can be performed both day and night,” said Minister Mhagama.

“These conditions are often accident-related, and urgent medical intervention is critical.”

The minister emphasized the importance of efficiency and accountability in the delivery of specialist services and directed the new board to focus on improving service quality, enhancing customer care, promoting medical tourism, and strengthening international academic collaborations.

She also called for the development of new specialized services and improvements in the working environment for MOI staff.

“The appointment of this new board is aimed at reinforcing MOI’s leadership in providing high-quality specialist care in orthopaedics, neurosurgery, and related fields,” Mhagama added.

Furthermore, she noted that the government has significantly invested in the health sector, including the introduction of advanced medical services at MOI, such as brain surgery powered by artificial intelligence and minimally invasive spinal procedures.

In her remarks, board chair Dr Martina Njelekela welcomed the appointment and pledged to implement all directives from the Ministry, aligning them with the broader vision of the government.
