Milestone as SGR launches cargo freight services

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) has officially launched cargo transportation services via the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), marking a significant step in the modernization of the country’s logistics sector.
A statement issued on Thursday by TRC’s Head of Information and Public Relations, Fredy Mwanjala, confirmed that the service begins with one daily cargo train.
According to the schedule, the train will depart from Pugu Station at 4:00 a.m., make a scheduled stop in Morogoro at 6:00 a.m. to allow the passage of passenger trains, and is expected to arrive in Dodoma at 2:05 p.m.
Mwanjala noted that TRC plans to gradually increase the number of trains and wagons in the coming days to accommodate more cargo and meet growing demand.
“The Corporation welcomes businesses, institutions, and all stakeholders in the transport sector to take advantage of this modern, fast, and secure service for moving their goods,” he said.

According to the statement, the launch of cargo services comes after the successful operation of SGR passenger trains. Since the introduction of passenger services on June 24, 2024, more than 2.5 million travelers have used the service as of June 2025.
TRC says the shift to freight transportation marks a new phase in unlocking the full potential of the SGR and supporting national economic growth.
