Makutupora Red wins global appeal in the grapevine market

DODOMA: The variety of grapes produced at Makutupora farm in Dodoma has been recognized for its exceptional qualities that place it among internationally acclaimed grape types.
One of its most notable attributes is its high sugar content, making it ideal for juice and wine production.
This was revealed today, July 30, 2025, by Senior Researcher Felista Mpore from the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) – Makutupora Centre, during a press briefing in Dodoma.
According to Mpore, beyond its high sugar levels, the Makutupora Red variety is also resistant to diseases, drought-tolerant, high-yielding, and comes in attractive colors that enhance its market appeal.
“Makutupora Red is a crop with great environmental resilience and commercial potential. It is well-suited for commercial farming and value addition for both local and international markets,” she said.

She further explained that researchers from various countries had previously collected genetic material from the Makutupora Red grape to compare with other global varieties. Their findings confirmed the unique superiority of the Tanzanian grape.
“These results have placed Tanzania on the global map as a producer of premium grapes suitable for wine and juice processing,” she added.
Mpore urged farmers to increase their efforts in grape farming by adopting improved agricultural practices and engaging in value addition to maximize economic benefits. She noted that TARI continues to provide training to farmers and agricultural stakeholders on best practices in grape cultivation and processing.
“We will use the upcoming Nane Nane exhibitions, including the national-level event to be held in Nzuguni – Dodoma, as a platform to educate farmers and encourage investment in grape farming,” she emphasized.
