League title hangs on Dar Derby clash

AS the curtains begin to fall on another exhilarating sea son of the Mainland Premier League, all eyes are locked on the top of the table where the championship race is boiling down to a thrilling finale be tween arch-rivals Young Africans and Simba.
With just two matches remaining for both title con tenders, the gap between them is razor-thin only a single point separates leaders Yanga, sitting on 76 points, from their closest challengers Simba, who trail narrowly with 75. The penultimate round of matches, set for this Sunday, will set the stage for what could become the most dramatic conclusion in recent league history.
Yanga will square off against Dodoma Jiji, while Simba will take on already-relegated Kagera Sugar. Both fixtures are must win for the respective teams if they are to keep their title hopes alive going into the final round none more so than the final-day showdown: the Dar es Salaam Derby set for 25th June.
Should both clubs emerge victorious on Sunday, the ultimate decider will indeed be the derby. It will not only be a contest for city bragging rights but a winner-takes-all clash that will determine the 2024/2025 Mainland Premier League champions.
With both teams already securing qualification to next season’s CAF Champions League, pride, legacy and domestic supremacy are now the only prizes left in this head-to-head saga. Yanga have been nearly faultless this season, with 25 wins from 28 matches, suffering just two defeats and one draw.
They boast an imposing goal difference of +66, having scored 76 and conceded just 10 testament to their attacking verve and defensive discipline.

Their last five matches read like a champion’s resume: five straight victories. Simba, though trailing by a single point, have been equally formidable. With 24 wins, three draws and only one defeat, they’ve netted 68 goals while conceding just 11, giving them a goal difference of +57. They too are on a perfect five-match winning streak, showcasing momentum and confidence at the right time.
Their Sunday opponents offer different challenges. Yanga face a mid-table Dodoma Jiji side that have managed to stay clear of the relegation zone but have nothing left to play for, suggesting a more straight for ward fixture. Simba, meanwhile, will face a demoralised Kagera Sugar side that have already been relegated.
Statistically, both top sides are highly favoured to win setting the table for an epic showdown.
While the battle at the top grabs headlines, the drama at the other end of the table is equally intense. Two clubs have already been mathematically relegated to the lower division Ken Gold of Mbeya, who sit bottom with 16 points and Kagera Sugar, who have just 23 points from 29 games. Both have endured difficult campaigns and will now face the daunting challenge of re grouping for next season’s Championship League.
Attention now turns to the playoff zone involving 13th and 14th-placed sides currently Tanzania Prisons (30 points) and Fountain Gate (29 points). The final Sunday fixture will determine their fates. The side that finishes 13th after this last round will face the 14th-placed side in a relegation playoff.
The winner will retain their spot in the Premier League, while the loser will go on to face the winner of the Championship League playoff for a final opportunity to stay in the top flight. This mechanism adds further intrigue and stakes to the weekend’s fixtures.
For teams such as Namungo (32 points) and Pamba (33 points), survival is not mathematically assured either.
A slip-up could see them dragged into the relegation playoff fray, depending on other results. Every goal scored and conceded could be the difference between another season in the Premier League or a relegation scrap in unfamiliar territory.
In the mid-table, the likes of Azam, Singida Black Stars and Tabora United have had solid seasons but lacked the consistency to mount a seri ous title challenge.
Azam, currently third, with 60 points, are likely to finish in that position, giving them a shot at continental competition via the CAF Confederation Cup same as Singida Black Stars who sit at fourth with 56 points. JKT Tanzania, Mashujaa and Coastal Union, all hov ering in the mid-30s point bracket, can take pride in relatively stable campaigns and look ahead to building stronger squads for next sea son.
However, their recent form dips indicate room for improvement, particularly in goal-scoring and defence. If current form holds, it is likely that Young Africans and Simba will each collect three points this Sunday, meaning the title will be de cided on the final day.
The derby will then not only be a matter of prestige but of ultimate consequence an all or-nothing clash reminiscent of footballing dramas rarely seen even in Europe’s elite leagues.
On the other end, Fountain Gate must win and hope for a favourable result from Tanzania Prisons or Namungo if they are to escape the dreaded playoff. The bottom half of the table could yet shift dramatically depending on the smallest of margins goal difference and head-to head records may be decisive.
As we enter the final chapter of the 2024/2025 sea son, Tanzanian football fans are in for a climactic finish. The Dar derby looms large as the title decider, while the relegation and playoff fates of several clubs remain un certain.
