Late Prof Maliyamkono due for burial today
KAGERA: REKNOWNED scholar, Professor Thadeo Luta Maliyamkono who died last Sunday in Dar es Salaam, is expected to buried here today.
The body of the late Prof Teddy Maliyamkono (as he was popularly referred to) arrived at the Bukoba Airport yesterday and he will be buried today at his home village Katale, in Bukoba DC in Kagera Region.
During his lifetime, Prof Maliyamkono was Professor of the Economics of Education and founder Director of the Eastern and Southern African Universities Research Project (ESAURP) at the University of Dar es Salaam.
He was born in 1939 in the then West Lake Tanganyika (now Kagera Region). After attaining his Master Degree at the University of Manitoba in Canada he completed his PhD at Stanford University in 1978. He has enjoyed a long academic career as Professor of Education at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM).
Among his research books include “The Challenge for Tanzania’s Economy (1986) and Industries “Moving Tanzania Forward” which was launched in 2019 by Dr Tulia Ackson, Speaker of the Parliament.
Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa also launched another book authored by Prof Maliyamkono “The Game Changer” chronicling the late President John Magufuli’s first term in office between 2015 and 2020.
Mr Majaliwa described the book as a first-class reference.
Premier Majaliwa said the book attempted to explain why Tanzanians were locked down by poverty amid abundant natural resources.
Prof Maliyamkono is survived by a widow and several children.
