Lagislators tout achievements as Samia ends term

DODOMA: AS the sixth phase government winds up its first term, the period will be largely remembered for major achievements in implementing strategic mega projects.

The completion of Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHPP), the launching of first phase of Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), the construction of government city and the completion of Kigongo-Busisi, East Africa’s longest bridge and a steady economic growth, stand out as outstanding achievements by President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s Sixth Phase Government.

The feats dominated discussions in the National Assembly during the weeklong deliberations of the 2025/2026 national budget as Members of Parliament sang praises to President Samia for exemplary and daring leadership that lifted the country to new heights during her four years in office since succeeding the late fifth phase leader Dr John Magufuli.

Every legislator who had the chance to contribute to the upcoming national budget tabled on June 12 by Finance Minister Dr Mwigulu Nchemba serenaded President Samia for excellent execution of flagship projects.

But President Samia’s first term received more accolades from the MPs for socio-economic transformations in their regions, districts and their respective constituencies.

They heaped praise on President Samia’s administration for its ambitious and far-reaching development agenda, citing massive infrastructure, health, education and economic projects that are reshaping lives across the country.

Fatma Tawfiq, Special Seats MP (CCM), commended the government for rolling out multi-trillion-shilling projects with visible trickle-down effects at grassroots levels.

Tawfiq commended the construction of the Dodoma Outer Ring Road and the Government City project, describing them as potential tourist attractions.

She highlighted government investments in school infrastructure, attributing improved student performance in national examinations to these efforts.

She praised the President’s efforts in transforming the investment landscape, especially in the capital city, Dodoma, citing the recent establishment of a 250-tonne-per-day edible oil factory and a leather shoe factory as examples of industrial progress.

Mchinga MP Salma Kikwete hailed President Samia for her strong and visionary leadership and praised her administration’s efficiency in disbursing development funds from national to the ward levels.

“Our President, Dr Samia, has timely disbursed funds for water, electricity, education, health and infrastructure projects all over the country,” Salma stated.

She disclosed that Mchinga constituency alone has received 11bn/- for roads, 18bn/- for water projects, 17bn/- for education and a staggering 31.3 bn/- for agriculture projects.

She added that all villages in her constituency have been electrified and out of 236 hamlets, 181 now have access to electricity.

Tabora North (Uyui) MP Athumani Maige said President Samia’s leadership has left an indelible mark on his constituency.

“In the health sector, we had no health centre. Today, we have four. We also lacked a district hospital, but Mama Samia made that possible. In addition, we have built eight dispensaries during her tenure,” he explained.

He touted major progress in water access, stating that 71 out of 98 villages now have reliable water from Lake Victoria, accounting for over 89 per cent coverage.

Maige also praised improvements in education, noting that when President Samia took office, 10 wards had no secondary schools.

“Today, all 19 wards have secondary schools. We also have a VETA centre and three new high schools,” he added.

He commended the revival of sisal farming—Tabora’s key cash crop—highlighting the entry of six active buyers who have enabled farmers to earn fair prices and reinvest in their farms.

Buhigwe MP Kavejuru Felix (CCM) applauded the government for its efforts in water and road infrastructure, as well as agricultural subsidies.

“All 44 villages in Buhigwe now have water and farmers are benefitting from subsidised fertilisers,” he said, extending thanks to President Samia for the region’s transformation.

Felix cited the completed 268-kilometre road linking Kakonko, Kibondo, Malagarasi, Kasulu and Manyovu, as well as the near-completion of the Tabora–Kigoma road as major achievements under President Samia.

“The 506-kilometre Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Tabora to Kigoma is already underway, and construction on the 282-kilometre Uvinza–Msongati SGR stretch has commenced with contractors now on site,” he praised.

He also pointed to the ongoing facelift of Kigoma Airport and renovation works on MV Liemba and MV Mwongozo, including the construction of a shipyard.

“Kigoma is evolving into a vibrant business hub connecting Tanzania with Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia. This will greatly enhance regional revenues and accelerate economic growth for Kigoma and beyond,” Felix said.
