KAGERA Regional Commissioner (RC) Mr Albert Chalamila

KAGERA Regional Commissioner (RC), Mr Albert Chalamila has directed the Bukoba Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (BUWASA) to issue notice to all water bills defaulters including government departments.

The RC issued the directive on Wednesday during his an impromptu visit to BUWASA offices where he addressed a meeting attended by workers under the Ministry for Water including BUWASA, RUWASA and Lake Victoria Basin.

“I have been informed that customers owe BUWASA 100m/- which has affected the water utility operations. This is unacceptable. I hereby direct BUWASA Managing Director to issue a notice to all the customers who have not paid their water bills and disconnect the service from those who will fail to clear their debts,” he said.

BUWASA  Managing  Director (MD), Engineer  John Sirati  informed him that all the  14 wards  have been  connected  to water  network including  Bilele, Nshambya, Miembeni,  Bakoba,   Katoma,  Ijuganyondo, Kashai, Kibeta,  Rwamishenye,  Hamugembe, Kahororo, Buhembe, Nyanga and Kagondo.

At full capacity about 18 million litres were being produced per day while the current demand stood at 13 million litres per day, he said.

During her recent tour in Kagera region, President Samia Suluhu Hassan   launched the long awaited Kyaka-Bunazi township water supply project, in Missenyi District   that was implemented at cost of 15.7bn/- upon completion.

She praised engineers under the Water Ministry for the good work done in supervising the project that would benefit residents in Kyaka, Kassambya and Bunazi wards. Out of the 17.7bn/- the Ministry for Water contributed 6bn/-.

The mega project was utilizing water from the Kagera River to supply clean water to residents at Kyaka trading centre, Bunazi, Kagera Sugar and surrounding wards of Kilimilile, Kassambya and Mushasha.

Currently, the area had a population of about 65,470 and is expected to increase to 77,055. The water demand to-date was about 741,000 litres and during the next five years the demand will be 1.3milllion litres.

Kyaka-Bunazi township water supply project is among pledges made by the late President Dr John Magufuli during his 2020 Presidential campaigns.

President Samia directed the Ministry for Finance to release 500m/- a repayable loan that would hasten the connection of water pipes to the respective households.

However, she warned workers under the Bukoba Water and Sanitation Agency (BUWASA) who are supervising the project, to ensure the water connection is hastened and should avoid inflating water charges to the customers.
