Jafo urges FTC to fast-track 32 cases to boost business

DAR ES SALAAM: MINISTER for Industry and Trade, Dr Selemani Jafo, has called on the Fair Competition Tribunal (FTC) to swiftly resolve 32 pending cases to remove business barriers and foster fair market competition.

Speaking during the inauguration of the Council’s FTC, Dr Jafo revealed that the tribunal had been inactive since June last year due to the absence of members, leaving many cases unresolved.

“I urge you to address these cases. I believe you will carry out your duties with professionalism and fairness. Go and uphold justice,” Dr Jafo said.

He also called for immediate orientation training for the new members so they can begin work without delay.

The minister further cautioned the members against corruption, stressing that tribunal decisions must be based on justice and genuine competition.

“Sometimes, when companies decide to merge, complaints may arise from competitors or the public. It is vital to act diligently and rule according to the law. This institution is independent, no one will interfere with your work,” Jafo added.

He also highlighted the need to address the problem of counterfeit goods.

On his part, the FCT Registrar, Mr Mbegu Kasikasi, said the 32 cases involve various sectors, including energy, water and electricity some under regulatory bodies like EWURA as well as counterfeit goods reported by the Fair Competition Commission (FCC).

Tribunal Council Chairperson, Judge Rose Ibrahim assured that all cases will be handled fairly, impartially and with the necessary speed to help boost the national economy.
