India out to cement ties with Tanzania

India has assured the country of rolling out more scholarship programs to Tanzanian students in its bid of cementing ties with the East African nation.

The Indian High Commissioner to Tanzania Binaya Srikanta Pradhan said his country would continue offering scholarship programs mindful of the demand of such courses to Tanzanian students.

“Tanzania remains our number partner in matters education and we want to assure you that we will continue rolling out more courses and programs to attract more students from your country,” explained the envoy on the sidelines of 75th Anniversary of Indian Independence held here last week.

According to the diplomat, India has offered more than 500 scholarship programs to Tanzanian students, to date.
Mr Pradhan further assured that is his country was committed to tighten the comprehensive partnership with Tanzania.

“Our two countries continue to enjoy long-standing relations, in a special way, we will today commit to support the education sector,” he added.

Tanzania and India have enjoyed traditionally close, friendly and co-operative relations.

From the 1960s to the 1980s, the political relationship involved shared commitments to anti-colonialism, non-alignment as well as desire for South-South Cooperation and close cooperation in international fora.

Former President Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere continues to be held high in high esteem in India and was once conferred with the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding for 1974, and the International Gandhi Peace Prize for 1995.

Speaking at the occasion, Arusha regional commissioner John Mongella who attained his university degree in India underscored the need of cherishing and valuing diplomatic ties between the two countries.

He said: India means a lot to Tanzania, the onus is on us to ensure that we treasure such a relation.

The anniversary’s night, dubbed Azadi Ka Amrith Mahotsav was also punctuated by mesmerizing dances and showcase of wealth of cultural heritage from the country’s 28 states.
