Dar volleyball teams eye top awards at Kenyan meet

THE Dar es Salaam volleyball teams both men’s and ladies are eying cash prize money at the forthcoming tenth edition of Africa Merchant Assurance Company (AMACO) International volleyball tournament.

The event is scheduled to kick off from Friday to May 19, this year in Eldoret, Kenya.

Dar es Salaam combine teams are expected to travel to Eldoret a day before the start of the tournament. According to the organisers, Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF), winners, second and third placed at the event will receive Ksh 100,000, 75,000 and 50,000 respectively.

Dar es Salaam Regional Volleyball Association (DAREVA) Technical Committee Chairman Nasoro Sharifu told the ‘Sunday News’ that teams under head coach veteran Yusuph Mkarambati are well prepared to battle for the top honours.

The Dar es Salaam teams received a massive boost as host’s top ladies teams opted out of the event. Kenya Pipeline, the AMACO ladies defending champions will not defend this year's title in Eldoret.

According to organisers KVA, Pipeline and Kenya Prisons (women) pulled out of the tournament that has attracted over 50 clubs from East Africa including teams from Rwanda and Uganda, because majority of their regular players are involved with the national team preparation.

The Kenyan national team is preparing for the Continental Olympic qualifiers in Puerto Rico and the FIVB world Grand Prix group three opening leg in Argentina in June.

However, Dar men’s team will have to do it over other top team like Kampala Amateur Volleyball Club, Nemo Stars from Uganda and Kirehe Volleyball Club of Rwanda.

Also in the lists are men's defending champions Kenya Defence Forces (Ulinzi), Kenya Prisons and General Service Unit, who will certainly make a stiff competition. This week, DAREVA had to change their league fixture to enable the Dar es Salaam teams prepare effectively for the Kenyan event.

Sharifu said that: “It is one of Kenyan tough tournaments because it attracts top teams from different nations. We have strong teams also that are capable of matching other top teams, we only need support and exposure.”
