Three win tickets for CAT finals in Morocco


THE Arusha Gymkhana Club and the Kijitonyama Club of Dar-es-Salaam are fitting out youth players who will represent the country in the continental level tennis championship in Morocco.

The ‘African Junior Tennis Competition,’ comes up this Sunday, September 10, and is to run for a week up to September 16 in Casablanca. The tennis championship will involve both girls and boys aged from 12 years and below according to the organisers.

Three players from Tanzania are to fly to Morocco on Friday, September 8, from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport of Nairobi. The players include, Shana Mao and Faith Nnko from Arusha Gymkhana Tennis Club and their counterpart, Glory Lyimo from Kijitonyama club.

The three-member team will be accompanied by the national youth tennis team coach, Nicholaus Leringa, who said: “Our mission is to bring the African Championship cup to Tanzania so that next year, 2018 we may qualify for the World Youth Championship.”

“In order to be able to participate in the International level tournament we need to at least finish in the top three positions,” explained Leringa. He stated that the three players had previously qualified from the Eastern and Central African Youth Tennis Championship in which the girls did well while the boys failed to qualify.

“That is why now, only three girls have qualified to represent Tanzania in the event ,” said the Coach. The African Junior Tennis Championship is organised by the Confederation of African Tennis (CAT) in collaboration with the International Tennis Federation (ITF).

The tournament is eligible for young people who were born between January 2005 and December 2005. Participating countries include, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Kenya, Madagascar, Egypt, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Togo, South-Africa, Benin, Nigeria ad the hosts Morroco.
