YOUNG Africans striker Obrey Chirwa has been voted as the best player of October this year of the Mainland Premier League.
This was confirmed yesterday by the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) Media and Communications Officer, Alfred Lucas who said Chirwa’s performance in the top flight league qualified him to win the honour.
“Some people were questioning about Chirwa’s eligibility to win last month’s best player award, but TFF through its Award Committee was fully convinced about his best performance last month,” Lucas said.
Chirwa who will pocket 1m/- from the league’s sponsors Vodacom, beat his teammate Ibrahim Ajib and Simba’s defender Erasto Nyoni to win the prestigious monthly award.
The Zambian striker was instrumental in his team’s seven points earning from three matches he played. Chirwa’s performance contributed much in making his team climb up four positions, sixth in September to the second place at the end of October.
Chirwa netted the winner when Yanga defeated Kagera Sugar 2-1 at Kaitaba Stadium in Bukoba and provided a goal assist in the same match.
Likewise, the Zambian striker netted once in his side’s 4-0 win over Stand United at Kambarage Stadium, Shinyanga and he as well provided an assist for the fourth goal.
At Uhuru Stadium, Chirwa scored the vital equaliser during the epic Dar es Salaam derby against their traditional rivals, Simba and made his team to draw 1-1 at the end of the 90 minutes.
However, Simba’s overlapping defender Erasto Nyoni provided four goal assists for his team which gave him a green light to compete for the award while Ibrahim Ajib netted three goals to his name with a single goal assist as well.
The previous winners of best player of the monthly award are Simba’s Ugandan hitman Emmanuel Okwi who won it in August as Singida United’s defender Shafiq Batambuze claimed a September award.
