YOU can now study a one-year foundation programme to qualify for admission for any degree programme at all universities in the country, thanks to Open University of Tanzania’s (OUT) newly introduced Foundation Programme, a preparation course for degree programmes.
According to OUT Director of Communications and Marketing, Dr Mohammed Omary, the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) has approved the foundation programme that is only provided by OUT countrywide.
Eligible students are all form six leavers who passed with at least E and S in two subjects of their combinations, holders of diploma with at least a Grade Percentage Average (GPA) of between 2.0 and 2.9 and holders of NTA level five certificates.
In an interview with the ‘Daily News’ during the just ended 13th Exhibitions on Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation in Dar es Salaam, Dr Omary said TCU approved the programme after its curriculum met all the required standards.
TCU had banned all foundation programmes offered at various universities countrywide, as some were below standards. Now, the programme will only be offered by OUT which managed to meet all the required standards in its new curriculum.
OUT was established in 1992 to help those who don’t get the chance to continue with higher education to study in a distance mode, after sitting and passing examination for the preparation programmes (foundation courses) whereby students study on their own without leaving their workplaces and have flexible examination schedules.
With the newly improved foundation programme, even employees who need to upgrade the levels of their education can now grab an opportunity to pursue the programme at OUT.
According to Dr Omary, applicants will not be forced to travel to OUT headquarters as admission forms were available at all OUT centres countrywide, including those from Unguja and Pemba in Zanzibar.
