Northern regions to enjoy low fuel prices

MOTORISTS in Arusha, Manyara, Tanga and Kilimanjaro will enjoy decreased fuel prices this month, thanks to low transport costs resulting from loading petroleum products from Tanga port instead of Dar es Salaam port.

However, according to the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) indicative prices released yesterday, the rest of the regions loading petroleum products from Dar es Salaam will pay more for increased prices.

The four regions will start receiving fuel through Tanga port effective from this month. “There was no new consignment of petroleum products received through Tanga port in September and therefore no change in world oil market prices with the current applicable Free on Board prices being those of July,” fuel regulator’s report stated.

The prices of petroleum products in the northern regions for the month of October will remain the same as they were in the preceding month.

The regulator has advised Oil Marketing Companies for their customers in the northern regions to receive petroleum products through Tanga port instead of Dar es Salaam.

The retail prices for petrol in the northern regions have decreased between 24/- per litre and 31/- per litre for petrol which is equivalent to 1.1 per cent and 1.4 per cent. Diesel prices decreased 38/- per litre and 45/- per litre equivalent to between 1.9 per cent and 2.2 per cent, while kerosene declined by 29/- per litre and 36/- per litre which is 1.5 per cent and 1.8 per cent respectively.

During the month under review, retail prices for petrol, diesel and kerosene in other regions loading from Dar es Salaam port increased 74/- per litre which is equivalent to 3.72 per cent, 21/- per litre 1.11 per cent and 47/- per litre 2.61 per cent respectively.

The wholesale prices for the three petroleum products have also increased by 74.07/- per litre, representing 3.94 per cent change, 20.94/- per litre equivalent to 1.18 per cent and 47.22/- per litre which is 2.78 per cent respectively.

The increases in local prices have been caused by the increases in the world oil market prices and depreciation of the Tanzanian Shilling against the United States Dollar, the currency used in the procurement of petroleum products.
