PRIME Minister Kassim Majaliwa has commended the ongoing construction of Philip Morris Tanzania Limited’s factory in Morogoro Region, which is expected to address farmers’ woes of low tobacco prices.

The Premier said this over the weekend in his tour of the tobacco processing facility which is being constructed at Kingolwira in Morogoro Municipality. “I am informed that Philip Morris is the leading buyer of tobacco for many years and thus the new factory will not only support government’s industrialisation agenda but solve farmers cry low tobacco prices,” he said.

He added, “This is the time for our tobacco farmers to benefit from their hard work. Farmers have been calling on the government to increase tobacco price and now the Philip Morris factory project will address the challenge,” If the company has been the leading buyer and has embarked in putting new facility that will demand more tobacco than before and obviously the prices will change.

PM said further that when an investor sets aside billions of shillings to construct a factory like this it means they have confidence in the country’s investment policy and the resources available. He urged the stakeholders involved to practice good working relations with investors so that they can attract others.

“When a Member of Parliament or Regional Commissioner makes frequent visits to a factory like this, it is very easy to identify and address challenges that are affecting production,” he said.

Speaking at the same event, the Minister for Industry and Trade, Charles Mwijage, called upon Morogoro residents to take full advantage of the factory which will help solve the challenge of unemployment in the area.
