HEET project underway – Govt
THE Ministry of Education, Science and Technology through Higher Education Economic Transformation (HEET) project is currently rehabilitating and putting up new buildings at all 14 public universities as well as five higher learning institutions, Parliament was informed here on Friday.
Deputy Minister in the docket, Mr Omary Kipanga told the House that the said institutions had already received money to continue with construction of new infrastructure as well as rehabilitating the old ones through the HEET project.
HEET is a five-year programme that is being implemented by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST) in collaboration with the World Bank for the purpose of improving and transforming higher education in Tanzania.
The objective of the HEET Project is to increase enrolment and improve the quality and labour market relevance of degree programs in priority disciplines of the selected public universities and institutions while improving governance and management of the higher education system.
The project seeks to invest in infrastructure for modern and effective teaching and research, and by training to the highest standard the lecturers, researchers, and administrators needed by universities.
According to the deputy minister, the government was recognizing the various challenges including devastated infrastructures at various public universities countrywide.
Mr Kipanga was responding to a question posed by Mwantum Zodo (Special Seats-CCM) who had wanted to know when the government would make repairs of old infrastructures at various public universities.
Responding, the deputy minister said, in looking for solution on devastated infrastructures, the government had made several repairs at the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), Mbeya University of Science and Technology (MUST), Ardhi University (ARU) and the Moshi Co-operative University (MoCU).
