Govt unveils 410 PPP projects accelerating economic growth

DODOMA: THE government has identified 410 projects across the country to be implemented through Public-Private Partnerships (PPP), in a strategic push to draw private investment and accelerate development within local government authorities.
According to the PPP Centre, Executive Director David Kafulila, the identification process has been completed across all 184 local government authorities in the country.
“The next step is to publicly unveil these projects, enabling investors across the country to seize the opportunities they present,” Mr Kafulila said on Monday.
The PPPC’s Director of Projects, Mr Agustino Saibul said that this initiative aligns with the government’s broader strategy to increase private sector participation in key sectors, reduce reliance on government budgets and promote efficient, innovative project delivery.
“This approach enables councils and municipalities to implement critical development projects without depending solely on government funding, while enhancing efficiency and innovation in both implementation and management,” he added.

The projects cut across sectors including transportation, ICT, agro-processing, real estate, energy, tourism, markets, public transport buses and stands, fishing infrastructure, education, housing and waste management.
Industry analysts have welcomed the move as a significant milestone for decentralised development, empowering local governments to drive regional economic progress by leveraging private capital and expertise.
The government anticipates that expanding PPP projects at the local government level will stimulate economic activity, create employment opportunities and improve public service delivery for millions of Tanzanians.
Additionally, he said they are building council capacity by exposing staff to private sector expertise and strengthening project management skills, having so far trained 2,877 local government employees to effectively manage PPP projects.
“This helps them manage resources better, adopt best practices and improve accountability for more sustainable service delivery,” Mr Saibul said.
Among notable PPP projects completed include the construction of Dar es Salaam Development Corporation (DDC) Kariakoo one stop business complex along Msimbazi Street and bus service provision for the Dar Rapid Transit Project Phase I.
The PPP initiative is expected to stimulate local business growth, increase employment opportunities and improve revenue collection for the municipal authorities.
