Govt issues stop order of illegal construction

Ms Angelina Mabula

THE Minister for Land, Housing and Human Settlement Development Ms Angelina Mabula has issued a stop order of all illegal construction in the country.

Equally, she directed the removal of filling stations which have been constructed without considering the required distance of 500 metres from one station to another.

Minister Mabula issued the directives in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday, during a working session with Assistant Commissioners for Land from various regions.

“We have continued to witness an increase of unplanned settlements and leaders are silent …buildings are being erected but they are not in master plan… you are supposed to oversee the constructions and those which are illegal should be stopped,” she said,

The minister also said that some filling stations have been built without considering the required distance, noting that  it is very dangerous  in case of fire outbreaks.

“The distance between one fuel filling station and another was 200 metres but you are now supposed to change to 500 metres, these stations are being built anywhere and you don’t take any action,” Ms Mabula said.

The Minister also expressed dissatisfaction with poor performance and lack of cooperation between land commissioners and other leaders.

She directed the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Land, Housing and Human Settlement Development Dr Allan Kijazi to take actions against land commissioners and their assistants who have failed to deliver.

Ms Mabula said land officials have been embracing ‘business as usual’ syndrome, which has affected their performance.

“We are working on disciplinary measures to be taken against some land officials in Mbeya, Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, Arusha and Lindi,” she said.

She said disciplinary measures which have been taken include dismissing them including three in Mbeya and four in Dodoma. She directed similar measures to be taken in other regions.

The minister further said that some officials have been engaging in cheating especially in property valuation, noting that her office has received a list of their names and it is currently working to take stern measures against them.
