Gairo eyes prosperity through avocado farming

MOROGORO: GAIRO District in Morogoro Region is emerging as a promising hub for avocado production in Tanzania, thanks to government efforts and support from agricultural stakeholders aimed at transforming the crop into a major driver of economic growth for local communities and the nation at large.
Farmers in villages within Ngonwe Division are capitalising on the region’s favourable climate and fertile soils, which are ideal for avocado cultivation.
According to the District Agriculture Officer, Phillemon Issack, a total of 105,360 avocado seedlings have already been distributed to farming groups in the division.
“We expect to harvest 460.08 tonnes of avocados in the initial seasons by 2028, and yields are projected to increase steadily in subsequent years,” said Issack.
Meanwhile, Morogoro Regional Commissioner Adam Malima called on farmers to embrace modern farming practices and move away from traditional subsistence agriculture that offers limited returns. Speaking during a press briefing on preparations for the fourth edition of the “Samia Kilimo Biashara Expo 2025 Gairo”, slated to begin last Sunday, Mr Malima urged farmers to seize the opportunity to gain new knowledge and build meaningful partnerships with key stakeholders in the agricultural sector.
“This year’s Expo will focus on connecting farmers with financial institutions, researchers and investors. We encourage citizens to participate in large numbers—this is a rare and valuable opportunity,” he said.

The event was scheduled to be opened by Songwe Regional Commissioner, Jabir Makame, who formerly served as Gairo District Commissioner four years ago. Mr Malima noted that his involvement symbolises recognition for the role he played in advancing agriculture in Gairo, particularly in promoting avocado farming.
He added that both the regional and district governments are committed to raising awareness that any crop can be commercialised if produced beyond subsistence levels, thereby encouraging a shift toward agribusiness.
The Samia Kilimo Biashara Expo 2025 will conclude on Saturday in Rubeho Ward, with Mr Malima expected to officiate the closing ceremony. On his part, Gairo District Commissioner Japhari Kubecha reaffirmed the district’s commitment to promoting agribusiness as a pathway to economic transformation for farmers, the council and the nation.
“The exhibition will provide valuable training on modern farming techniques, agricultural technology, crop processing and building commercial networks,” he said.
