Female athletes take centre stage in Dar

DAR ES SALAAM: THE 7th edition of the Women’s Athletics Championship officially kicks off in Dar es Salaam today, uniting 155 female athletes from 31 regions across mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar in a powerful showcase of talent, determination and sporting excellence.
The two-day event running from today through tomorrow at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium will be preceded by a special seminar for athletes and referees later this afternoon, aimed at ensuring a well-coordinated, competitive and professionally managed championship.
The opening ceremony is expected to be graced by the Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Palamagamba Kabudi, along with representatives from Japan, JICA, the Tanzania Athletics Federation, and other key development partners.
Speaking during a pre-event press briefing, National Sports Council (NSC) Secretary General, Neema Msitha confirmed that all preparations have been finalised, including logistics, athlete accommodation and technical arrangements.
“Athletes will compete in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1,500m, 5,000m, the 4×100m relay and the javelin throw,” Msitha stated.
“Women’s participation in sports remains lower compared to men, but the government and stakeholders continue to work tirelessly to close this gap,” she further added.

She furthermore said this year’s championship will go beyond the track as participants will benefit from workshops on menstrual hygiene, financial discipline and access to health check-ups.
“This event gives athletes the chance to test their abilities, improve performance, and gain the confidence needed to compete on larger regional and international stages. Over the years, the championship has been instrumental in identifying promising female athletes who have gone on to proudly represent Tanzania globally,” she said.
Meanwhile, Tanzania Athletics Federation, President Rogath Stephen praised the championship for its unifying impact on the athletics community.
“This event brings together athletes, coaches and officials from different regions, fostering collaboration and teamwork as well creates a valuable learning environment where young athletes develop discipline, leadership and teamwork skills,” Stephen said.
He added that the competition enhances the visibility of women in sports and a vital step toward achieving gender equality. It challenges outdated stereotypes, inspires young girls to dream big, and encourages families and communities to support women in athletics.”
