‘Exercise for better health’

DAR ES SALAAM: PRIME Minister Kassim Majaliwa has instructed Regional and District Commissioners to assess all jogging groups in their areas and incorporate them into local development plans.

Prime Minister Majaliwa made the remarks during a yesterday jogging event in Dar es Salaam, he stated, “Go and engage with these groups, acknowledge their presence and guide them to participate in the economic development of their communities through various projects.” The Prime Minister also urged leaders of jogging groups nationwide to formalise and register their groups within their respective councils.

He added through the registration, they can take advantage of economic opportunities and resources available to them.

He suggested, “Once registered with the Department of Social Development and the Department of Culture and Sports of each council, these jogging groups can operate as cooperative, investment or business entities.”

Premier Majaliwa has stated that one of the strategies the government has set is to promote physical exercise among Tanzanians to combat non-communicable diseases.

Health Minister Ummy Mwalimu emphasised the impact of not exercising leads to increasing heart diseases and diabetes.

“Even if you have diabetes or high blood pressure, regular exercise can prevent serious complications, including the need for amputation. Prevention is better than cure,” she emphasised.
