ARUSHA: The former Controller and Auditor General (CAG) Prof. Mussa Assad proposed Saturday grilling all new members of the Board of Directors for state owned firms to determine their proficiency before being called to the big table.
Prof. Assad said at the working session in Arusha bringing Board Chairperson and CEOs of Public Institution that some boards are “likely to be incapacitated” as a result of incapable members.
Assad who is currently the Deputy Vice Chancellor at the Muslim University of Morogoro narrates that he once faced a board member who declined to offer any opinion during board meetings since there was no seating allowance. “This is unacceptable,” he said.
Prof Assad said it is high time that all members of the board undergo strategic interview to ensure the appointees add value to parastatals.
“Interviews will help filter unqualified members,” he said. His suggestion received similar sentiment from ACT- Wazalendo leader, Zitto Kabwe.
According to Zitto, while the Chairperson can be appointed by the President, Members and the Chief Executive Officer of such entities should also be appointed by the Board to ensure they are answerable to the board.
