EFD awareness education targets buyers at Kariakoo Market
THE Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has launched a special campaign for encouraging buyers at the Kariakoo Market in Dar es Salaam to demand electronic receipts (EFD receipts) from sellers.
The campaign, dubbed: ‘Twende nao tukawaelimishe’ which is meant to educate buyers over the importance of demanding the electronic receipts was launched on Thursday, this week, by TRA’s Kariakoo Regional Tax Manager Alex Katundu.
When launching the campaign at the market, Mr Katundu educated the buyers who found without receipts over the importance of demanding the receipts from sellers.
Mr Katundu explained that, tax education has been provided regularly to traders, but with little emphasis on the part of buyers, something which has caused them to forget their role of demanding the receipts.
“In most cases we have been providing to traders over proper uses of Electronic Fiscal Devices (EFDs), but nowadays we have come with special strategy of educating buyers about their right to demand for the receipt every time they buy goods,” he said.
He said the exercise will be done to buyers who will be found to have bought goods without the receipts.
The buyers will be gathered at TRA’s office located at Kariakoo in the city for education.
“Since these buyers are found at various places of Kariakoo, this exercise is being done by gathering them at the TRA’s office for education and make them as ambassadors for change in the society,” he stated.
He said the education to the buyers was meant to make them aware of the importance of asking for the receipts so as to avoid being fined between 30,000/- and 1.5m/-if found without receipts.
One of the buyers at the market, Ms Elizabeth Kimaro, appealed to fellow buyers to get rid of a tendency of buying commodities without demanding for the receipts since such act denies the government revenues for the development.
