Eaton appointed new Lugalo Lady Captain

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA People’s Defence Force (TPDF) Lugalo Golf Club of Dar es Salaam has appointed the first Tanzanian lady professional golfer, Angel Eaton to take over the club’s ladies captain position.

Lugalo Overall Captain, Japhet Masai said in Dar es Salaam yesterday that Eaton has been appointed to the position effectively from March 26, 2024.

Masai said: “Lugalo Chairman, Michael Luwongo has appointed pro-Angel (Eaton) to be the club’s new lady captain. Pro Angel has been appointed for the position to lead the ladies’ section and represent them accordingly.”

He said Eaton took the position from former captain Hawa Wanyeche who had saved the office before retiring recently.

“Chairman Luwongo on behalf of the management of the club is very grateful to Wanyeche for her excellent leadership in this position for five consecutive years.

“On behalf of the chairman, leaders and all members of Lugalo, we wish Eaton success and good leadership in her new position,” he said.

National team member Wanyeche has served the section since January 2020 when appointed to take over from club’s first lady captain Ayne Magombe.

Wanyeche was appointed after Magombe wrote her resignation letter, as a club optimist with her experience in the game and as national team captain experience would help run the section smoothly.

She did it well including, amongst others organising the first Lugalo Ladies Open in 2021 the event that went on to become one of the prestigious ladies’ events.

The tournament that impressed Eaton went on to win the title aggregating 152 grosses from two rounds of 36 holes.

Masai said the leadership would help Eaton fulfil her duties and they gear up together to grow ladies to reach a high level and noted that the club has wonderful players.

Eaton who was a national team member before joining paid rank last year, will bring new expertise to the section.

Commenting after news of the newly appointed lady captain Wanyeche said: “I would like to use this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to our club leadership for the great cooperation that has provided during my leadership term.

“Many thanks to the ladies’ section committee; I worked with Joyce Ndyetabura, Queen Seraki and Hilda Reiffenstein and the work was well done,” she said.

The new appointment and outgoing have received a big welcome and farewell from many golfers in and outside the club.
