Dr Mwinyi to compensate people whose land given to the Flyover project

ZANZIBAR: The President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has assured citizens that the government will pay compensation to all residents who have given way to the implementation of development projects in their areas, stressing that no citizen will be denied their rightful compensation.
President Dr Mwinyi made the remarks today, January 6, 2026, during the inauguration ceremony of the Dr Hussein Ali MwinyiβMwanakwerekwe Flyover in the Urban West Region, held as part of the celebrations marking the 62nd Anniversary of the Zanzibar Revolution.
He stated that the government has already established a Special Committee to verify and assess compensation in areas affected by development projects, with the aim of ensuring that every citizen is paid what they are entitled to fairly and in accordance with the law.

Dr Mwinyi emphasized that genuine development is driven by the availability of quality infrastructure, particularly roads, and called on citizens to be ready to cooperate with the government by giving way to development projects for the benefit of the nation as a whole.
He explained that the construction of roads, bridges, and flyovers increases the value of land and houses, making it important for citizens to support the governmentβs efforts to implement development projects in their areas.

Additionally, President Dr Mwinyi said that the construction of the flyover is historic and serves as evidence of leadership that leaves a lasting legacy. He urged citizens to take good care of the infrastructure and to refrain from building within road reserve areas, which are specifically set aside for water, electricity, and communication infrastructure.
He added that the government continues to strengthen various infrastructure projects, including the construction of the Mangapwani Integrated Port, the Mpiga DuriβShumba Port, and the upcoming commencement of construction of the Wete Portβsteps aimed at opening up Zanzibar economically and accelerating development.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Construction and Transport, Dr. Khalid Salum Muhammed, praised the efforts and achievements of President Dr. Mwinyi during his leadership, particularly the major reforms in the road infrastructure sector that have significantly improved transportation.
