Dr Mwinyi graces the construction of the Uzi Ng’ambwa Bridge with a call for unity

ZANZIBAR: THE President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has urged citizens to work closely with the government to ensure that development plans and projects are implemented and completed within the set timelines.

President Dr Mwinyi made the call today, January 2, 2026, during the foundation stone–laying ceremony for the construction of the Uzi Ng’ambwa Bridge and its connecting roads. The event was held at Uzi Ng’ambwa in the South Unguja Region and formed part of the celebrations marking the 62nd Anniversary of the Zanzibar Revolution.

He said the government is genuinely committed to delivering development to citizens in all aspects of life, and therefore, it is important for the public to support these efforts rather than allowing a few individuals to hinder the implementation of development projects.

Dr Mwinyi noted that some residents had refused to collect their compensation to allow for the construction of the Uzi Ng’ambwa Road, a situation that led to delays in the implementation of the project. As a result, he directed Shehas, District Commissioners, and Regional Commissioners to ensure that all residents who have not yet collected their compensation do so immediately, so that the remaining section of the road can be constructed on schedule.

The President also expressed satisfaction with the progress made in the construction of the Uzi Ng’ambwa Bridge, which is 2.2 kilometers long, along with its connecting roads measuring 6.5 kilometers. He urged the contractor to expedite the completion of the remaining sections so that citizens can begin benefiting from the project.

Presenting a technical report on the project, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Construction and Transport, Engineer Ali Said Bakari, said the 2.2-kilometer-long Uzi Ng’ambwa Bridge is being constructed by CCECC for 36bn- and is designed to accommodate vehicles weighing up to 60 tons. The project also includes the construction of a 6.5-kilometer dual-carriage asphalt road.

The construction of the Uzi Ng’ambwa Bridge has been described as historic, given that for many decades, residents of the area faced significant transportation challenges that hindered social and economic activities.
