DMI, TASHICO join forces to boost Tanzania’s Blue Economy

MWANZA: THE Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute (DMI) has entered into a groundbreaking partnership with the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Company (TASHICO) aimed at strengthening practical skills, research, and development in the shipbuilding, repair, and operations sectors.

The agreement was officially signed in Mwanza by Mr. Erick Hamiss, Director General of TASHICO, and DMI Director Dr Tumaini Gurumo.

Members of the boards and management teams from both institutions witnessed the signing ceremony.

Speaking at the event, Dr Gurumo emphasized the importance of this collaboration in enhancing the practical training of DMI students.

“At DMI, we produce seafarers, and for them to be competent in the field, they must gain real-world experience. This partnership will allow our students to train hands-on with TASHICO and participate in vital maritime research that will benefit the water transport sector in Tanzania,” he said.

Echoing his sentiments, Mr. Hamiss underlined the agreement’s potential impact on Tanzania’s growing blue economy. “Our country is blessed with abundant water resources, and this partnership will play a key role in tapping into that potential. Through joint research and training efforts, we’ll improve performance and service delivery within our institutions,” he said.

Captain Ibrahim Bendera, TASHICO Board Director, also stressed the importance of aligning the collaboration with maritime law and regulations. “We must uphold seafarers’ rights and working conditions under this agreement to ensure they operate in safe and professional environments,” he noted.
