China’s CADFUND announces plan to upgrade TAZARA

BEIJING, China: THE China-Africa Development Fund (CADFUND) says it is investing in a project to upgrade Tanzania Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA), it was revealed in the Chinese capital, on Tuesday.

The TAZARA project is one of the projects CADFUND has reaffirmed to prioritize in its investment projects.

Chairman of CADFUND, Wang Shaodan made the pledge in his discussion with Tanzania’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Mahmoud Thabit Kombo in Beijing, China on June 17, 2025.

According to information released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, the support from CADFUND is part of an agreement that was signed between the two countries under the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

In their discussion, Minister Kombo thanked the fund for their continuous support and urged them to increase the amount of funds for Tanzanian projects.

On his part, CADFUND’s Chairman noted that, due to the strong bilateral relations between Tanzania and China and since the establishment of CADFUND in 2006, the fund has already signed agreements to implement projects worth over 800m US dollars in Tanzania.

Additionally, he said that currently, the fund is supporting projects in the country valued at over 73m US dollars.

According to Mr Shaodan, CADFUND is the second-largest investment fund in Africa and in Tanzania it has facilitated investments in sectors such as agriculture, cement production, broadcasting, and information and communication technology (ICT).

Other sectors given priority include industrial development, infrastructure construction, and transportation.
