CAG/PCCB REPORTS  CCM: Govt should act

The ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi, through its Central Committee ( CC), has directed the government to institute stern measures against officials involved in the violation of laws and embezzlement of public funds and property.

The Central Committee of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi held its ordinary meeting in Dar es Salaam on Saturday under its Chairperson President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Speaking to reporters on the resolutions reached by the party’s powerful organ, CCM Secretary for Publicity and Ideology Sophia Mjema said despite congratulating the government for the good performance and improvements recorded in various areas, stern measures must be instituted against public officials involved in the rot uncovered by the Office of Controller and Auditor General (CAG) and the Prevention and Combatting of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) in their audited government reports.

“The Central Committee held its ordinary meeting under its Chairperson President Samia Suluhu Hassan during which it congratulated both the Union and Zanzibar governments for implementing the 2020-2025 election manifestos, the documents that foster Tanzanians’ development,” she said.

She said the audited reports showed the government recorded 99 per cent improvements in various areas in implementing its development agenda.

However, she said the Committee was equally saddened by the weaknesses identified by PCCB and CAG, most of which resulted from embezzlement of public funds and property.

“The Committee received and deliberated on various issues, including the CAG and PCCB’s 2021/ 2022 audited reports that showed that the government has continued to improve public service delivery,” she said.

However, she said there are areas that need improvements such as strengthening revenue collection system. She said failure to have in place a harmonized revenue collection system creates loopholes for dishonest officials to cause financial losses to the government.

According to Ms Mjema, the Central Committee directed the government to trace and identify leaders who have been abusing their positions, including failing to place ahead public interest.

“The Committee has directed to identify public officials who are abusing their offices by placing ahead their personal interests instead those of the public,” she said.

In her briefing, Ms Mjema said the Committee hailed the Office of Controller and Auditor General (CAG) and the Prevention and Combatting of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) for embracing professionalism in their duties, including identifying areas that the government has excelled in terms of performance and those that require improvements.

She said the CC applauded CAG’s office and PCCB for pinpointing weaknesses including giving advice on areas that need improvement in the audited reports for the major purpose of dealing with the malpractices related with embezzlement of public funds and property.

During its meeting, the Committee also applauded the government for professionally coordinating the three-day tour of the US Vice-President Harris Kamala.

The US Vice-President visited the country from March 29, 2024 to March 31, 2023. The visit is expected to take Tanzania-US diplomatic and bilateral ties to greater heights.
