Businesses affected as floods devastate Arusha

Heavy rains have triggered flash floods and wreaked havoc across Arusha Region destroying key infrastructures, houses and paralyzing businesses in the Northern part of Tanzania.

Rosemary Moshi, a resident in Arusha says traders have been unable to open their businesses since morning following rains which began early Thursday. Rains destroyed their homes and businesses.

“I don’t even have clothes to change. We are asking the government to help us through the emergency disaster fund,” Ms Rose tells our correspondent in the city.

Amiledo Justine who took part in the rescue mission says rains have affected the lives of both human beings and animals.

He says most businesses located in Arusha have been damaged while others have lost their animals and other properties have been destroyed.

Arusha Regional Commissioner John Mongella has advised residents to take all necessary precautions to avoid more disasters as the rainy season begins.

“Rains are blessings but unfortunately there are places that have been adversely affected. We have already instructed the region’s road agency and a contractor is coming to fix the area so that we continue with our normal lives,” RC Mongella said.

RC Mongela points out the disasters as one of the effects of climate change.
