DAR ES SALAAM: BARRICK Gold Corporation has handed over modern equipment worth 100m/- to the Police Force for testing blood alcohol content in motorists as part of the strategy to promote road safety.
Barrick’s Corporate Communications and Country Liaison Manager, Georgia Mutagahywa said in Dar es Salaam yesterday that the donation is part of Barrick’s campaign on ‘Journey to Zero’ aimed at promoting workers’ health and safety but also reaching other stakeholders in the community.
“The primary aim of Barrick’s campaign is to improve the safety of its employees but that it goes beyond borders to support the government in ensuring that the whole community remains safe particularly when using transport services,” he said.
Mr Mutagahywa said Barrick is committed to continue collaborating with various stakeholders in supporting road safety campaigns and the equipment donated will help to identify drivers who violate traffic rules by taking too much alcohol.
Kinondoni Zonal Police Commander, Senior Assistant of Police Mtatiro Kitinkwi said the donation of the modern equipment has been made at the right time as the police force is continuing with the campaign to end irresponsible drinking among drivers which is the major source of accidents in the country.
He thanked Barrick for the donation and also for taking an active role in supporting the police force in efforts to end road accidents in the country.
He said the police force will continue to provide education to all road users in the country particularly to motorists to avoid irresponsible drinking.
