Barrick North Mara equips local leaders with projects management

BARRICK North Mara has initiated a training programme for leaders of 11 villages surrounding the mine and community development committee members in Tarime district of Mara Region, to manage community and economic projects.
The three days training started yesterday in Tarime have been sponsored by Barrick North Mara under the training facilitators from the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM).
Apart from village chairpersons, village executive officers and councillors, the training also attracted about 63 experts from Tarime District Council and Mara Region.
Speaking at the opening of the training, Tarime MP Mwita Waitara said the training will help in enhancing the efficiency of the projects implemented from the corporate social responsibility funds.
“The training will offer an important opportunity to learn for the leaders. Tarime residents desire to see projects implemented, and Social Corporate Responsibility (CSR) funds spent appropriately,” he said.
The North Mara Mine Relation Officer, Mr Zakayo Makobero said the training aims to empower the leaders at the grassroots level on how to manage better the projects financed by the Gold Mine CSR funds.
“The objective of the training organised by Barrick North Mara is to empower the leaders at the village and district levels to make sure the CSR projects are implemented efficiently and bear the expected fruits to the community,” he said.
On his part, the Tarime District Chairman, Mr Simion Samwel said the training for the village and district leaders has been of paramount importance and will help address various challenges that have been emerging in managing community projects.
“I thank Barrick North Mara for organising the training. It is the first since when the company started to implement CSR projects. It will play a key role in enhancing creativity among leaders and managing the projects efficiently,” said Mr Sylvanus Gwiboha, the Tarime District Acting Executive Director.
On her part, the Special Seat Councilor from Mwema Ward, Ms Maria Sylvester said the training will provide them with skills in managing better the CSR projects for the benefit of the community.
The Nyakunguru Village Chairman, Mr Chacha Makuri said the training will provide them with guidelines and come up with productive projects as well as manage them professionally.
