Barrick advices students to embrace innovation
IRINGA: BARRICK Gold has called on university students to go beyond the classroom and embrace innovation, practical skills and collaboration to thrive in the modern job market.
Barrick’s Training and Development Manager Mr Elly Shimbi said that graduates must be proactive in seeking opportunities, particularly in fast-evolving sectors like mining, where talent and adaptability are increasingly in demand.
“Going beyond traditional learning will help bridge the gap between education and employability, ensuring graduates are better prepared to contribute meaningfully from day one,” he said.
Mr Shimbi said Barrick Gold’s operations and community empowerment initiatives during a conference in Iringa, which brought together students from various universities.
The event was organised by the Association Internationale des Étudiants en Sciences Économiques et Commerciales (AIESEC) and sponsored by Barrick Gold.

“It is important for educated youth to cultivate a culture of collaboration, communication and networking as they pursue employment and other life-changing opportunities that can positively impact society,” Mr Shimbi said.
In addition, Barrick offers internship programmes for students still pursuing their education, providing them with valuable hands-on experience and exposure to real-world work environments.
AIESEC Tanzania Country Director, Mr Vicent Manira, said the profound changes in the job market driven by rapid technological advancements.
“We are living in an era of rapid technological evolution. To stay ahead, students must study diligently, stay informed about emerging trends across all fields and continuously nurture their creativity,” Mr Manira said.
Mussa Constantine from Mkwawa University College of Education, said on behalf of other students, that they appreciation for Barrick’s continued support in building student capacity through the professional development seminars organised annually by AIESEC Tanzania.
“We sincerely appreciate Barrick for empowering university students in Iringa. We’ve learned so much about the opportunities available and how to take advantage of them,” he said.
