Amson Group, Zambian firm sign strategic partnership to generate power

ZAMBIA: African energy firm Amsons Group from Tanzania has announced a strategic partnership with Zambia’s Exergy Africa Limited to develop and expand power generation projects and energy infrastructure in the country.

The project will include 1,000 megawatts (MW) of solar power and 300 MW of coal-fired power, with a total investment of 900m US dollars — 600m US dollars allocated for solar power and 300m US dollars for coal.

The agreement, part of Amsons’ broader strategy to expand its business in the energy sector, includes investment in a major 1-gigawatt (GW) solar power plant through Africa Power Generation, a consortium of renewable-energy investors registered in Zambia.

The signing ceremony was held at the State House in Zambia, where Amsons Group CEO Edha Nahdi represented the company. Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema witnessed the signing and emphasized the importance of the investment in strengthening the country’s energy security and diversification.

President Hichilema praised Amsons Group as a respected African company, stating that its solar project will help Zambia achieve—and potentially exceed—its goal of adding 1,000 MW of solar power to the national grid. He added that this progress will help end electricity rationing and foster a stable environment for economic growth.

For his part, Nahdi said Amsons Group and its partners are proud to collaborate with Zambia on a project that drives strategic transformation in the energy sector.

Exergy Africa Limited Director Monica Musonda said the partnership reflects the rapid growth of Africa-led efforts to strengthen the energy sector and bridge infrastructure gaps through collaborations among homegrown companies.

Amsons Group operates in five African countries—Tanzania, Kenya, Mozambique, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Zambia—where it has facilitated the creation of more than 10,000 direct and indirect jobs.
