Alliance One donates 222m/- to Morogoro schools
Alliance One Tobacco Tanzania (AOTT) has donated school facilities worth 222.76m/- to two Morogoro based primary schools, Kingolwira and Bungo.
The donation included renovating and building new classrooms, kitchen, and sickbays as part of the firm’s corporate social responsibility and environmental social governance policies.
AOTT’s Director of Finance Festo Mwalongo said the donation was part of the company 400m/- set aside for CSR to all tobacco growing areas where it operates.
”We normally set aside same mount every year to give back to the community around our areas of operations” he said on behalf of the firm’s Managing Director, Ephraim Mapoore during the handover ceremony in Morogoro recently.
Morogoro Regional Commissioner Fatma Mwassa, who was a guest of honour, challenged other companies to emulate AOTT as per government agenda.
“We all know that the company buys tobacco across the country and mostly Tabora, but Morogoro received bigger slice than other regions,” Ms Mwassa said.
The RC promised on behalf of the schools to take a good care of all the donated facilities by making sure that they would remain in good shape for many generations to come.
According to the RC Bungo School have 1600 pupils while Kingolwira had 2000 pupils and they are doing well, academically.
AOTT Chief Spokesperson John Magoti said they have constructed toilets for disabled pupils at Bungo at 10.4m/- and classroom for kindergarten for Kingolwira at 21.2m/-and rehabilitated five classrooms at 48.3m/-.
Other facilities donated to Kingolwira were a school kitchen complete with the necessary amenities at 45.7m/-, a solar power at 13.7m/- and a 162-meter borehole.
“The company has also builds toilets for teachers, pupils, as well as sickbays for girls with special needs worth 48.3m/-,” he said, adding that the company had also donated a large scale water purifying system worth 35.3m/-.
Kingolwira Head Teacher John Fulana said the pupils were no longer seating on the floor as it was the case in past and the solar power generation will reduce the school electricity bills.
