Airtel Money, pawaPay expand Partnership to power Cross-Border transfers in Africa

TANZANIA: Airtel Money Africa, the mobile money arm of Airtel Africa, has expanded its partnership with Africa’s largest mobile money payment service provider, pawaPay, to facilitate seamless cross-border payments for licensed International Money Transfer Operators (IMTOs) across seven key markets.
The collaboration marks the launch of pawaPay’s inbound remittance services into Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia, Malawi, Gabon, Congo Brazzaville, and Tanzania, enabling IMTOs to deliver funds directly into more than 161 million Airtel Money wallets in real time.
According to Airtel Money Africa, the extended partnership builds on a five-year relationship in domestic mobile money operations and will enhance backend processes through pawaPay’s robust infrastructure, which processes over four million transactions daily with 99.9 per cent uptime.
Airtel Money Africa Chief Executive Officer, Mr Ian Ferrao, said the integration will strengthen financial inclusion and economic growth across the continent.

pawaPay Chief Executive Officer, Mr Nikolai Barnwell, said remittances remain central to the company’s mission of simplifying payments in Africa.
“Deepening our relationship with Airtel Money allows International Money Transfer Operators to leverage our world-class infrastructure for seamless cross-border payments,” he said.

pawaPay said it plans to roll out the service to additional Airtel Money Africa markets in the coming months.
