TRA launches business desk to support local traders

DAR ES SALAAM: IN a move aimed at boosting economic inclusion and supporting small business growth, the Commissioner General of the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), Mr Yusuph Juma Mwenda, has officially launched a Special Business Facilitation Desk to boost small-scale business.
The initiative is designed to identify and support informal traders by helping them navigate tax-related challenges and integrate into the formal economy.
The launch event, held in Dar es Salaam, was attended by Ilala District Commissioner Edward Mpogolo, local business owners, and various entrepreneurs.

Speaking at the launch, Mr Mwenda emphasized the importance of bridging the gap between informal businesses and the formal tax system:
“Many small traders face tax challenges simply because they lack the right information or access to support. This desk will give them a voice—it will listen, provide guidance, and help solve their problems so they can grow their businesses confidently.”
Mr Mwenda also noted that the initiative aligns with the government’s broader mission to expand the tax base while empowering local entrepreneurs.
On his part, Ilala District Commissioner Edward Mpogolo praised the initiative, calling it a strategic step toward inclusive economic growth:
“This support desk is more than just a service point—it’s a powerful tool to drive regional and national economic development. By supporting our small traders, we’re investing in the future of our economy.”

The desk will offer personalized assistance, education on tax compliance, and a platform for entrepreneurs to voice concerns. It also seeks to formalize thousands of businesses currently operating outside official systems, thereby increasing access to loans, markets, and government support.
With this initiative, TRA is sending a clear message: no business is too small to matter, and every entrepreneur deserves the chance to thrive
