90 pc pick national IDs in Mtwara

MTWARA: SOME 90 per cent of the citizens who registered for National Identifications (ID) Cards in Mtwara Region have received the documents, the Regional Registration Officer with the National Identification Authority (NIDA), Mr Gide Magila has said.

Speaking with the ‘Daily News’ here, Mr Magila said a total of 287,574 IDs were produced for Mtwara in the first phase and 300,149 in the second phase.

He said 270,083 out of the 300,149 in the second phase have been issued to the owners and the remaining IDs were still in the locating places.

“As we speak, 90 per cent of the IDs out of the 300,149 produced in the second phase have been picked and the remaining ten per cent of the IDs are still in the collection centres,” he said, urging citizens who registered for the IDs to go and pick their documents, before they are being returned into the NIDA offices.

“The majority of the citizens who have not received the documents come from urban areas, some have passed on, while others have been transferred to other areas,” he said.

Last month, NIDA issued a statement indicating that it has come up with the new system to simplify collection of the IDs, where after visiting the NIDA’s website, a person has to go on the national identification cards dashboard then click on ‘Know Where Your ID Is’ that is written in Kiswahili “Fahamu Mahali Kitambulisho Chako Kilipo.”

The statement added that thereafter, a page that shows the regions will open, a step that will now require a person to choose the region and then a district they had registered, before further going down to the village/street they were living when they registered for the ID.
