Govt to engage youths in plan to create jobs through agriculture

DEPUTY Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (Policy, Parliamentary Affairs, Labour, Employment, Youth and the Disabled) Antony Mavunde has said the government is committed to empowering the youth economically to address unemployment.

Speaking to reporters yesterday ahead of International Youth Day to be marked in Arusha on Sunday, Mr Mavunde said the youth were key agents the government was committed to engaging in the industrial economy agenda.

He said they had decided to start a youth empowering programme through the formation of greenhouses with a view to changing the mindset of young people with regard to agriculture.

Mr Mavunde noted that the youth empowering programme 2016-2021 aimed at mobilising and encouraging the youth to engage in agriculture.

“The programme is implemented in five regions and in 35 districts where more than 35,000 young people are involved in the programme,” said the deputy minister.

Moreover, he said the government would work on challenges before the programme was implemented countrywide as an agribusiness strategy for the youth.

He used the occasion to urge district and municipal councils countrywide to set aside land for the youth to engage in agribusiness. Mr Mavunde said the response had not been that impressive since some councils had not set aside land for the youth and other groups.

“So far, only 217,000 hectares have been set aside for the youth to engage in agriculture and in other entrepreneurship and development projects so that they can address unemployment,” he noted.

The deputy minister further said they wanted graduates to understand well what agriculture meant for them and for the country and use it as an avenue through which the majority of youth could employ themselves and uplift their economic and social welfare.

The climax of International Youth Day will be marked at Patandi Teachers’ College in Arusha.
