POLICE in Kagera Region have arrested two people who were allegedly looking for a customer of albino body parts.
Kagera Regional Police Commander (RPC) Henry Salewi told reports in Bukoba that the suspects were arrested with the human body parts. The parts were displayed to reporters.
''The suspects were arrested on Wednesday (February 3). The arrest was made after police got a tip that two residents of Ngara were looking for someone to buy albino body parts," he said.
Kagera Regional Crime Officer (RCO), Superintendent Peter Matage, led a team of detectives to arrest the suspects. He said the team pretended to be in need of human body parts and arranged for a meeting with the "sellers" at Kidende Guest House in Ngara.
As agreed, on February 4, at around 5pm the detectives kept vigil at Kidende Guest House. The two suspects arrived at the scene carrying a large coat in which they were hiding the two body parts,'' he said.
Mr Salewi named the suspects as Jacob Philip (35) from Muruvyagira village, in Mugoma Ward and Bihagara Malu (54) a resident of Kabanga village, in Ngara District.
According to Mr Salewi, the suspects were offering the body parts at a price of 600,000/-.
He said initial investigations established that there was an international
criminal network involving suspects in Tanzania and neighbouring Burundi.
''We have contacted our colleagues in neighbouring Burundi to hand over the suspects to us for further investigation,'' he said.
Mr Salewi told this paper in a separate interview, that this was a second incident involving people suspected to trade in human body parts.
Last October, two other suspects were arrested at Kinagi Island, in Muleba district, looking for a buyer of human body parts suspected to be of an albino.
Mr Salewi confirmed to the 'Sunday News' that six albinos had to date been murdered in cold blood in Kagera region due to superstitious belief.

Death pelnaties for both the seller and the buyer. Without the buyer people will non kill the albinos. Pluss the government should do more to protect them. witch craft is still well and alive. This is what takas Africa backward. instead of pushing our selves for better education, partnership, Greed for self selving brings this shemefull acts. Its too bad, It has nothing to do with formal Education. Both well educated and non educated people do the same things. some of cultural belives are holding our modern education , and so toxic.
